Our little widebody racer is coming together! Fender pieces are cut out, underside of the body was hollowed out with a Forstner bit (which collected dust in my toolbox for 10 years), and all the epoxy is setting now. Next step — filling and sanding the seams so it looks like one piece, not three. Inserting some metal weight in the tail so ~ 80% is over the rear axle. And adding some curves!
Tequila break for dad.

Keep in mind that BSA policy does not allow cub scouts to use power tools. You might catch an earful from the Den Leader or the local Scoutmaster if they see these pictures.

When was this a thing? Theres pics of my pinewood days using a full arsenal of furniture tools to make a car.
Great teaching time, and 100% would reccomend a belt sander.

I don’t know if you’ve ever watched this engineer’s channel. He worked on the Curiosity for 9 years at NASA, then became an inventor. He’s got a couple tricks, and he is easy to listen to. You’ll get more credit because your son actually worked on his car!

I loved the pack i helped when i was a den chief. We had a seniors league for the dads and adults to get into with very loose rules and there were big groups that got together to make cars so it wasnt as much dad skunk works taking over kids cars.
I still got all 6 of the cars i ended up making

We already had a pack workday with bandsaws. I heard that used to be a common rule, but it’s mostly gone away. (And I’m the Den leader ;) )

Ah, pinewood derby time. My son is going to help out next weekend for the cub scout pack that feeds into our troop. He might take a few of his older cars so he can race on the down time, and as loaners for any cars that may break during the actual race.

It’s been a thing for a long time. My other reply has links to the guidelines.

Makes sense — fwiw, only the adults use the band saws and drills. The pic above is my sone boring a hole in scrap wood for practice. None of the boys used saws or drills. They’re mostly stuck doing design, sanding and painting.
Sorry, I can see how that was misleading.

I only know because our scout master was an Eagle Scout and he was was a stickler for the rules. He’s seen just about every injury a Scout could have. Before we started any activity, he’d make sure the den leaders understood the rules, so I heard about all of them. Even so, one of the kids from another den managed to get burned on our first camp out. He grabbed a kerosene lantern that wasn’t properly hung out of reach.

At all? or just to make pinewood cars? I could have sworn there was a blacksmith merit badge or welding merit badge.

Yeah, I was in one of those groups where I was at summer camp with a fire going and one of the adult leaders decided he needed to get some “watered down paint thinner” disposed of.
The world turned orange and my friend Phil had his chest hair singed off.

Older Boy Scouts are allowed to use power tools. Cub Scouts are not

Dang. When we got a new Scoutmaster, all hell broke loose in the lower ranks. That guy couldn’t keep the kids in check and didn’t have enough sway with the dads to get them to discipline their kids. I was glad we transitioned to Boy Scouts later that year.
